THE self esteem it is the foundation of any great transformation you want to make in your life. Keep this rule well! Once you decide to lose weight, whatever your reasons, it’s important to understand what it is and how to regain your self-esteem. Below, I’m going to give you some tips that have worked in my weight loss process!
What is self-esteem?
Self-esteem is a kind of evaluation that each person makes of himself, which can be positive or negative. In other words, it is the image or opinion you have of yourself. It is built from personal experiences, emotions, beliefs, behaviors, self-image and the image that others have about us.
Thus, it is not always easy to maintain high self-esteem when you are in the process of losing weight. However, it is also essential. When self-esteem is low, the person has difficulty in self-acceptance, does not feel love for themselves and has great difficulty in knowing about themselves.
It’s as if life somehow stopped, because you don’t feel capable of achieving goals and end up missing out on many opportunities, often sabotaging yourself.
What does self-esteem have to do with weight loss?
When a person is very overweight and wants to lose weight in a healthy way, he may have difficulties with his self-esteem. This is very common – and know that if you are going through this, you are not the only person in this situation.
The media, the market and society as a whole have an ideal standard of beauty that is almost unattainable for most people, which is a contradiction in terms. Women are even more demanded than men when they do not meet these requirements. We grew up with an idea that extreme thinness is something “beautiful” and that there isn’t much diversity within this ideal pattern. All of this impacts our self-esteem and our view of ourselves.
However, it is important to recognize what is right and wrong about mistreating yourself to achieve a standard. And yet: it is important to create a standard of beauty that suits your body and not the other way around. Self-esteem comes when we look for knowledge, about the world, about the body and about ourselves. The more you know yourself, the more you are able to create a good image of yourself.
You will understand that you can lose weight and be healthy without having to fit into stereotypes. That you’re not competing with other people to be thinner, you’re just looking for better health and an image you like. You start creating your own rules and values. Then, yes, you realize that you are able to change and have a better life. That losing weight with health is possible, and things are starting to show results.
How to connect with you?
If you feel that your self-esteem is a little low and you want to have a greater connection with yourself, here are some tips that worked for me:
- Put a stop to other people’s opinions. No one can tell you how you should feel or know what’s best for you but yourself. In the weight loss process, external opinion more hinders than helps.
- Find your inner truth. There is a voice within you that can lead you to your purposes. Do not fool yourself! It is not a voice with judgments and blame, but something that tells you what is really important to you. Take time each day and find a quiet space to listen to your inner reason.
- Create a self-care routine, even if it’s 5 minutes. Take an invigorating shower, take care of your hair, moisturize your skin, put on makeup, choose an outfit that reflects who you are. Small gestures make a difference!
- Welcome! Feel good about yourself even though you are overweight. You don’t need to love yourself only when you reach your weight loss goal. Allow yourself to love yourself right away as your process will be much easier. Seek your reasons for self-love.
- Work always pays off! This means that you will get great results if you are very committed to your process. In the toughest times, stick to the effort and you’ll see results. This can be very rewarding!
- Have a realistic, well-defined weight loss goal. Instead of wanting to lose weight all at once, divide how much weight you want to lose by the weeks you are willing to fight for it. Celebrate weekly wins!
- If it’s difficult to regain your self-esteem, seek psychological help. There are many free services around the world!
- Try to perform physical activities that you like in your weight loss process. This is also true for meals: you can choose a healthy and delicious menu.
- It’s all a matter of perspective. See your weight-loss process as challenging and fun, not a sentence.
